The City of Columbia Heights desired two, new municipal liquor stores to replace aging, deficient existing spaces, and also create a brand for their successful municipal liquor franchise.

The two stores, one located in the heart of the city's commercial area on Central Avenue and 50th and another located on the east side of the city on 37th Avenue, were designed to create an identifiable building type that customers could readily identify as the city's liquor franchise.  Each store was designed to provide maximum floor plan flexibility, while providing the most retail floor space available for each specific site.  Building materials and overall aesthetic qualities were selected to meet the city's extensive community development plan and standards, while still creating an original look for the stores.
