Maplewood Public Works Facility
Maplewood public works was designed as an expansion and renovation of the existing facility:
24,300 square feet - new 26,000 square feet - renovated
Completion in 2006
Construction cost: $2,000,000
Oertel Architects designed the expansion and planned the renovation of the existing facility which was constructed in 1976. The site is sloped, as shown in the images, which lent itself to a two story addition. The two story office portion of the expansion is around 4,000 square feet. The second level is currently unoccupied and the city is planning on making that space available for use by other city departments. A large 20,200 square foot vehicle storage area was added, as well as a new wash bay, for city vehicles. The exterior of the facility is comprised of precast concrete panels, ribbed aluminum metal panels and pre-finished aluminum storefront glazing. A major driving force of the design was the need for natural light. The vehicle storage area has translucent panels around the entire upper portion of the building, which helps mitigate the dependence on artificial lighting.
