MOUNDS VIEW PUBLIC WORKS FACILITY
Mounds View, Minnesota

  • Project type: New construction

  • Completion: Spring 2018

Oertel Architects worked with the City of Mounds View on the analysis and evaluation of their existing public works operations in 2015. We performed an in-depth study to evaluate their existing operations and to realize any future aspirations and expectations. The existing facility, site, and building were due for a number of improvements and expansions in order to allow the public works department to better serve the city. The city felt it in their best interest to start anew. In 2016 we were selected to proceed with a design for a new facility and the construction wrapped up in the spring of 2018.

A crucial part of the planning of this facility was the phasing and implementation plan for the construction process.  Oertel Architects worked closely with Maintenance Staff to look at how the existing building demolition and new building construction could be phased to allow for operations to remain in place safely during operations.  A careful plan was developed and issued to Contractors for bidding.  The pricing for temporary conditions to meet this need was asked for separately at the onset of the bidding.  In the end, the City decided to relocate all operations temporarily during the construction to eliminate the additional costs from the project budget for the temporary conditions, illustrating that the planning process can sometimes show that a good plan is still not in the best long-term interest of the user.
